The San Diego Padres are on the verge of making their second trade for a star pitcher in as many days, with the team expected to acquire righty Yu Darvish from the Chicago Cubs, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Darvish and Victor Caratini, who emerged as the right-hander's personal catcher in Chicago, will go to San Diego once the deal is completed, sources said Monday.

The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire former Cy Young winner Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays for top pitching prospect Luis Patiño, catchers Francisco Mejia and Blake Hunt and right-handed pitching prospect Cole Wilcox, sources familiar with the agreement told ESPN.

The Washington Nationals are looking to acquire an impact player and are "open" to trading Carter Kieboom.

Kieboom has been one of the club's more prized prospects in recent years.

The 23-year-old owns a .181/.309/.232 slash line in 165 plate appearances split between 2019-20. He was a first-round pick in 2016.

While a trade may not be likely, Yu Darvish's name has been floated in trade talks this offseason.

Darvish finished second in NL Cy Young voting to Trevor Bauer, who is a free agent.

The New York Yankees want to re-sign DJ LeMahieu, but Brian Cashman hasn't forgotten about the club's starting rotation.

Cashman acknowledged that New York has young arms -- Luis Severino, Domingo German, Deivi García and Jordan Montgomery -- but he wants a veteran presence to provide stability.

"I think we have a framework at the very least to fall back on," Cashman said of those young arms, "but I definitely feel like we need to try to address more certain innings. You don't want to be in a position where you're scrambling. ... No one ever wants to be in a scrambling mode, because then it dominoes into your bullpen and can have an adverse negative effect on you."

Bud Black has heard the trade rumors surrounding Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, but he isn't buying into them.

"My expectation is that they'll be with us come Opening Day," the Colorado Rockies manager said.

Arenado is scheduled to make $35 million in 2021 as part of a $260 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Rockies in 2019.

"It's great for baseball to talk about players and talk about trades and talk about movement, talk about free agency," Black said. "That's good for the game. It's great for the game to have that out there and baseball be in the news."

Mike Rizzo is throwing cold water on the idea of the Washington Nationals acquiring Kris Bryant in a trade with the Chicago Cubs after Dave Martinez hinted at the possibility.

"We haven't had a serious conversation about Kris Bryant in probably two years," Rizzo said. "He was not a big guy on our radar last year or this year. He's a great player, but at this point in time of where we're at, and what we have in our farm system, and where we're going, we think we can allocate our dollars and prospect capital in another way."

Rizzo has said his priority this offseason is a bat for the middle of the lineup as the team has been "pitching-orientated" in recent years. Martinez coached Bryant in Chicago before becoming manager of the Nationals.

"Very good player," Martinez said. "Like him a lot. For me, right now, unfortunately he is a Cub. His name definitely comes up in conversations. He's an unbelievable player. He's definitely a premier player in this league."

Bryant is in his final year of arbitration before becoming a free agent after next season.

Although there hasn't been much progress in talks, the Colorado Rockies remain interested in a possible Nolan Arenado trade.

According to a report, an Arenado trade "remains a realistic possibility."

Arenado has six years and $199 million remaining on the eight-year, $260 million contract extension he signed in February of 2019. He can also opt out of the deal after the 2021 season.

The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates have discussed trades centered around Josh Bell and Jameson Taillon, according to a report.

It remains to be seen how serious the talks have gotten.

Bell, 28, has struggled since hitting 37 home runs in 2019 and Taillon is coming off Tommy John surgery.

The Los Angeles Angels are "determined to add a top-of-the-rotation starter," according to a report.

The Angels' starting rotation had an ERA of 5.52 in 2020, second-worst in baseball.

Trevor Bauer may be an obvious fit. The 29-year-old grew up in the L.A. area and went to UCLA.
